Everything below concerns peptide backbone. We keep the language plain, cite what the science says, and separate well-supported claims from open questions.

The peptide backbone is chemically modified to resist rapid enzymatic breakdown in the body. A fatty acid side chain promotes binding to serum albumin, which slows renal clearance and supports an extended circulation time. These modifications allow less frequent administration than would be possible with an unmodified peptide. The precise contribution of glucagon receptor activation to the overall metabolic effect remains an area of active investigation, because glucagon raises glucose while also increasing energy expenditure.
Development has progressed through early- and mid-stage human studies in adults with obesity and with type 2 diabetes. Published phase 2 data reported reductions in body weight and improvements in glycemic markers over the treatment period. No regulatory agency has approved the compound for any indication, and it remains available only within controlled research settings. Whether benefits observed in trials translate into durable outcomes after treatment stops is not yet established.
Dissolution behavior depends on the amino acid sequence, the counterion content, and the buffer chosen. Many peptides disperse readily in water or mild aqueous buffers, while others require a small amount of organic co-solvent or a change in pH. Adsorption to plastic and glass surfaces can reduce the concentration of a solution over time, particularly at low concentrations. Filtration before analysis removes particulates, and aliquoting limits repeated freeze-thaw cycles that stress the material.
Research-grade peptide material is commonly supplied as a lyophilized powder, a form that limits degradation during transport and storage. Standard practice keeps such material cold and protected from light and moisture, with tighter conditions used for long-term archives. Once dissolved, solutions are generally considered less stable than the dry powder and are handled on shorter timescales. These established conventions derive largely from general peptide chemistry rather than from compound-specific evidence alone.

Modern-day diabetes is associated with two terms in the Chinese language. The traditional term, xiāo kě (消渴), means "wasting-thirst" and correlates closely with diabetes in most instances of historical description. The more modern term, táng niǎo bìng (糖尿病), means "sugar urine disease", and is equivalent to diabetes mellitus. It has been suggested that the modern term is derived from exchanges with Ayurvedic practitioners who called the condition madhumeha ("honey urine"). Within the Sinosphere (regions of East and Southeast Asia historically influenced by the linguistic and literary traditions of the Chinese empire), this etymology has also been borrowed into Korean (tang nyo byeong [당뇨병]) and Japanese (tou nyou byou [とうにょうびょう]). Reviews of diabetology history in Traditional Chinese medicine have classified the diagnosis and treatment of xiāo kě (消渴) into four periods, summarized below. Classic texts provided a typology of the condition and outlined various recommendations on diagnosis, development, treatment, and prevention. Knowledge of wasting-thirst was integrated with knowledge of diabetes during the Qing dynasty.
==== Estrogen receptors ==== In addition to its affinity for the androgen receptor, DHEA has also been found to bind to (and activate) the ERα and ERβ estrogen receptors with Ki values of 1.1 μM and 0.5 μM, respectively, and EC50 values of >1 μM and 200 nM, respectively. Though it was found to be a partial agonist of the ERα with a maximal efficacy of 30–70%, the concentrations required for this degree of activation make it unlikely that the activity of DHEA at this receptor is physiologically meaningful. Remarkably however, DHEA acts as a full agonist of the ERβ with a maximal response similar to or actually slightly greater than that of estradiol, and its levels in circulation and local tissues in the human body are high enough to activate the receptor to the same degree as that seen with circulating estradiol levels at somewhat higher than their maximal, non-ovulatory concentrations; indeed, when combined with estradiol with both at levels equivalent to those of their physiological concentrations, overall activation of the ERβ was doubled.
===== Translation/antisense ===== Genomics has not only helped find targets for many antivirals, it has provided the basis for an entirely new type of drug, based on "antisense" molecules. These are segments of DNA or RNA that are designed as complementary molecules to critical sections of viral genomes, and the binding of these antisense segments to these target sections blocks the operation of those genomes. A phosphorothioate antisense drug named fomivirsen has been introduced, used to treat opportunistic eye infections in AIDS patients caused by cytomegalovirus, and other antisense antivirals are in development. An antisense structural type that has proven especially valuable in research is morpholino antisense. Morpholino oligos have been used to experimentally suppress many viral types:
In May–June 1897, Thomson investigated whether or not the rays could be deflected by an electric field. Previous experimenters had failed to observe this, but Thomson believed their experiments were flawed because their tubes contained too much gas. Thomson constructed a Crookes tube with a better vacuum. At the start of the tube was the cathode from which the rays projected. The rays were sharpened to a beam by two metal slits – the first of these slits doubled as the anode, the second was connected to the earth. The beam then passed between two parallel aluminium plates, which produced an electric field between them when they were connected to a battery. The end of the tube was a large sphere where the beam would impact on the glass, created a glowing patch. Thomson pasted a scale to the surface of this sphere to measure the deflection of the beam. Any electron beam would collide with some residual gas atoms within the Crookes tube, thereby ionizing them and producing electrons and ions in the tube (space charge); in previous experiments this space charge electrically screened the externally applied electric field. However, in Thomson's Crookes tube the density of residual atoms was so low that the space charge from the electrons and ions was insufficient to electrically screen the externally applied electric field, which permitted Thomson to successfully observe electrical deflection.
Loop diuretics are drugs that are often used for the treatment of hypertension and edema secondary to congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or chronic kidney disease. Their effect, like all diuretics, is to cause the body to excrete more water in the urine. Loop diuretics are more effective than thiazide diuretics in patients with impaired kidney function. They get their name because they affect cells in a structure in the kidney called the loop of Henle.

In April 2023, British boxer Amir Khan was banned for two years after an anti-doping test revealed the presence of enobosarm following his fight against Kell Brook in February 2022. On May 1, 2024, American boxer Ryan Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance Ostarine the day before and the day of his upset win over Devin Haney last month, per a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association letter sent to all parties Wednesday and obtained by ESPN. The samples were taken prior to the fight, but the results weren't known until later. Garcia's A-sample also screened positive for 19-norandrosterone, but its presence is unconfirmed at this time. Garcia floored Haney three times during the majority decision victory, but that result could possibly be overturned because his B-sample tested positive on May 22, 2024. Garcia's fate now rests in the hands of the New York State Athletic Commission, which will adjudicate any suspensions and financial penalties. Sanctions also include the possibility of his win over Haney being overturned to a no-contest or having it changed to a disqualification. Despite his "B" samples returning positive results, Garcia has maintained his innocence and has cited substance contamination.
=== Screening === It is unclear if screening pregnant women for iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy improves outcomes in the United States. The same holds for screening children who are 6 to 24 months old. Even so, screening is a Level B recommendation suggested by the US Preventive Services Task Force in pregnant women without symptoms and in infants considered high risk. Screening is done with either a hemoglobin or hematocrit lab test.
=== First interplanetary probes === From the early 1960s both Cold War adversaries almost simultaneously initiated their own programmes which sought to reach other planets in the Solar System for the first time; namely Venus and Mars.
They are an important item in sadya, a vegetarian feast prepared during festive occasions in Kerala. The chips are typically labeled "plantain chips" when they are made of green plantains that taste starchy, like potato chips. In Tamil Nadu, a thin variety made from green plantains is used to make chips seasoned with salt, chili powder and asafoetida. In the western/central Indian language Marathi, the plantain is called rajeli kela (figuratively meaning "king-sized" banana), and is often used to make fried chips.

Retatrutide is an investigational synthetic peptide that activates three metabolic receptors: GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. It is being studied for obesity and type 2 diabetes. It has not been approved for clinical use.
Earlier incretin therapies engage one or two receptors. Retatrutide adds glucagon receptor activity, which may raise energy expenditure. Whether this produces larger clinical benefits is still being tested.
It has completed phase 2 trials and moved into later-stage evaluation. No regulator has granted approval. Access outside research settings is not authorized.
Mass spectrometry provides a mass value that can be compared with the expected value, while peptide mapping examines fragmentation patterns. Together these techniques support identity claims better than a single measurement can.
